Oral Pathology

Oral pathology is an area of dentistry that deals with the nature, identification, and management of diseases that affect the interior areas of your mouth. There are a variety of diseases and issues that can affect the mouth, though many share similar symptoms. These include: abrasions that don’t heal quickly, persistent sores, bleeding, discolored patches of oral tissue, changes in bone structure, and any other condition that causes oral distress. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, please do not hesitate to contact us as soon as possible.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer can appear in anyone, regardless of habits. Practicing risky behaviors, like chewing tobacco or drinking excessively, can contribute, but it can appear in the mouths of any individual. This is precisely why it is important for you to be in contact with your oral health care provider if you notice anything amiss. When it is caught early, oral cancer has a very high survival rate, so you need to be proactive. Of course, all of us at Balboa Dental Surgery will be vigilant as well and will be with you through every step of the process.

Oral Biopsy

If we determine that something could be wrong, we will perform a biopsy. This consists of taking a small tissue sample from your mouth and sending it to a lab where a pathologist or technician will look to see if there are any diseases present. If the biopsy returns negative, we will keep an eye out for any further developments. If it is positive, we will discuss treatment options with you. No two treatments should be the same, so we will work with you closely to develop the most effective, personalized plan to help treat any disease that may be present.
