We want our patients to enjoy a comfortable and relaxing visit, even if they have dental anxiety. To make this possible, our team will offer one of three dental sedation options. In today’s blog, your Newport Beach, CA, dentist talks about our approach to sedation dentistry and how this can ensure a comfortable visit even for those with dental anxiety!
The Reasons to Consider Sedation
With dental sedation, we can help you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation. This is beneficial for people with dental anxiety or special needs that could otherwise complicate the treatment process. If you are undergoing more extensive treatments, such as oral surgery, including tooth extraction, dental implant placement, and grafting, this could ensure comfort, with little memory of the process.
Choosing the Right Option for You
Our team will take several factors into account when we recommend a treatment option for you. For example, we will look at your anxiety levels and assess any medications you are currently taking. We also look at your age and weight too. We want to choose the best option to help you enjoy a positive treatment experience, even if you have anxiety about seeing us for treatment!
Our Three Calming Options
Our team could choose from three different treatment options. The most common is a mild form known as nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. You wear a mask over your nose and breathe in a gas to enter a deep state of calm and euphoria. Patients have little memory of the experience but stay conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed. The effects can be adjusted during treatment and wear off right away once the procedure ends, so you can return to work or school. You could even drive yourself home!
For a deeper state of calming, we could offer oral sedation in the form of a pill or liquid prior to the procedure. The effects are deeper and you still remain conscious, but have no memory of the procedure. The effects take time to wear off, so be sure to have someone ready to take you home afterward. The deepest form is intravenous, and offers a sleep-like state with no memory of the procedure. Again, you need to have someone available to bring you home afterward.
