newport beach sedationOur team provides oral surgery to handle more severe oral health concerns, from removing wisdom teeth before they threaten alignment to tackling tooth loss with dental implants. But to help ensure your comfort, we offer dental sedation. In today’s blog, your team at Balboa Dental Surgery talks about how we help smiles in Newport Beach, CA, with dental sedation.

The When and How of Choosing a Calming Option

We recommend dental sedation for patients who are nervous about the visit, have a fear of the dentist, or who may have special needs that make undergoing care a difficult process. This is also helpful for people undergoing more extensive treatments, such as wisdom tooth extraction or dental implant placement.

We choose from three different sedation options, based on your age, weight, medical history, medications being taken, and anxiety levels.

Nitrous Oxide

With nitrous oxide, we will offer a mild option that is safe for all ages. This is administered through a mask over your nose, so you enter a deep state of calm and euphoria, often with little to no memory of the procedure at all. We can adjust levels during the procedure, and the effects end once the treatment does, so you can return to work or school, or even drive yourself home!

Oral Conscious

If you need a deeper state of calm, we could offer oral conscious, which is administered through a pill or liquid taken before the procedure. We may have you fast for a few hours ahead of time, and will likely schedule care in the morning. You then enter a deep state of calm with no memory of the procedure, but you still remain conscious as you would with nitrous oxide, and able to respond to the dentist. The effects take more time to wear off, so you need someone available to take you home afterward.

IV

The deepest form of calming we have is administered intravenously, and again you may need to fast ahead of time. You enter a very deep and sleep-like state, with no memory of the procedure at all. The effects will take time to wear off completely, so once more you need someone on hand to take you home afterward. If you have any questions about our three different sedation options, or if you would like to schedule your last checkup and cleaning of 2026 and use your dental benefits before they expire, then contact our team today to learn more and get started!
