To ensure your oral surgery is comfortable, whether it is a minor tooth extraction or dental implant placement, we offer a calming solution. With dental sedation, we can help you remain calm and comfortable! In today’s blog, your Newport Beach, CA, dentist talks about how we keep you cozy with sedation dentistry.
When We Prescribe Sedation
When does a patient need to receive sedation? We could prescribe this for people who are undergoing more extensive oral surgeries, such as wisdom tooth extraction or even dental implant placement. These calming medications could also be helpful for people with dental anxiety, as we don’t want your fears to stand between you and the healthy, beautiful smile you deserve. Likewise, if you have special needs that make undergoing treatment difficult, we can employ our calming options.
The Factors That We Look At
If we decide that you need a calming treatment, then we have three different choices to select from. How do we choose the right one for you? We will look at different underlying factors, such as age, weight, medical history, or any medications you are currently taking. Your anxiety levels are also taken into account.
Our Calming Options
The most common (and mild) form is nitrous oxide. Also known as laughing gas, this will be administered through a mask over the nose. You breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little memory of the procedure despite being conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed. We can adjust the levels during treatment and the effects wear off once the procedure ends, so you can drive yourself home or even return to work or school.
With oral sedation, we have a deeper state of calm possible with a pill or liquid taken before the procedure begins. You enter a state of calm with little to no memory of the procedure, but you still remain conscious. The effects take time to wear off, so you will need someone on hand to bring you home afterward.
The deepest form is IV, which we administer intravenously. This allows you to enter a sleep-like state with no memory of the procedure. You will again need a ride home as the effects take time to wear off.
