newport beach sedation

Do you have dental anxiety, or special needs that make undergoing treatment a difficult process? To ensure you can receive the care you need with comfort, our team will administer dental sedation. In today’s blog, your Newport Beach, CA, oral surgeon looks at three different dental sedation options.

When You Should Consider a Calming Agent

Dental sedation is designed to help you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation. This can be very helpful if you are undergoing a more esthetic treatment, such as dental implant placement, tooth extraction, or grafting in the jaw or gums. This can also help patients with dental anxiety stay comfortable during care, and can assist patients with an overactive gag reflex or special needs. Our team will take several factors into account when we recommend an option, such as your age, weight, medical history, any medications you are currently taking, and your anxiety levels.

Nitrous Oxide

The most commonly prescribed option is a very mild one known as nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. To enter a calm state, you breath in the gas through a mask over your nose. You then enter a deep state of relaxation and euphoria. You will remain conscious and able to respond to the dentist, but will likely have no memory of the procedure. The effects will end as soon as the procedure does, so you can return to work or school, and even drive yourself! We can adjust levels during treatment too.

Oral Conscious Sedation

With oral conscious sedation, you again stay conscious but will have no memory of the procedure as this is a deeper state of calm. You take the medication in the form of a pill or liquid prior to the procedure. The effects take time to wear off completely, so have a friend or family member available to bring you home afterward.

IV

The deepest form of calming we offer is intravenous, and a trained anesthesiologist will be on hand to monitor you throughout the process. You will have no memory of the procedure and again, the effects will take time to wear off, so have someone ready to bring you home. If you have any questions about how we offer a calming agent and ensure a comfortable visit for you or your family, then contact our team today to learn more.
