newport beach dental emergencyWhen your teeth sustain serious injuries, this can be traumatic and lead to major complications without treatment. Which is why we want to help with emergency dentistry and oral surgery! In today’s blog, your team at Balboa Dental Surgery talks about treating traumatic dental injuries with emergency dental care.

Common Dental Emergencies

What are examples of dental emergencies that we need to seek treatment for? There are obvious ones, like a partially or fully avulsed tooth (knocked-out) or a tooth that is chipped or broken. But you should consider an appointment if you sustain an injury to the face or jaw and no damage is visible, as fractures to the teeth and jaws could be invisible to the naked eye, but leads to major discomfort and complications down the road. Injuries that damage facial structures are cause for concern too. But some could appear minor, such as something caught between your teeth or under the gums that causes discomfort and cannot be removed. This could lead to serious inflammation without attention!

Easing Your Discomfort

When you encounter a dental emergency, you or someone else should call our office right away. If you reach us during our usual operating hours, then we will try to see you same-day. If we are closed, you can leave a message so a team member can reach out to you about possible appointment times. In the meantime, you should rinse with warm water and never use anything but floss to try and dislodge a trapped object. Stem any bleeding with a cloth or gauze, and use a cold compress against the side of the face to control swelling. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever too!

If the tooth is knocked-out, pick it up only by the crown, not the root. Place it in a sealed container of salt water, and bring it with you. If you break a tooth and any pieces can be recovered, then bring it with you as well.

Treating Your Dental Trauma

Our approach to treatment includes lifelike cosmetic crowns to repair minor and more extensive damage. We can restore a knocked-out tooth to its proper place in your smile too. With oral surgery, we can address damage to your face or jaw, and even replace missing teeth that are lost completely with lifelike and long-lasting dental implants. If you have any questions about how we approach emergency dentistry, then contact our team today to learn more and start your treatment journey!
