For teens approaching adulthood, there could be big changes happening in the smile. With the arrival of the wisdom teeth, there could be misalignment, impaction, and even infection! But we can help. In today’s blog, your team at Balboa Dental Surgery talks about scheduling your teen’s wisdom tooth extraction during summer break, so they start fall with a healthier smile!
The Risks of Wisdom Tooth Eruption
When your teen’s third molars erupt, there will be little room to accommodate them. Which means they could only partially erupt, creating a serious impaction. They could crowd teeth to create misalignment and even undo previous orthodontic work. Their arrival could also damage teeth and increase the risk of issues like decay and infection. Which is why we want to remove these teeth before they even arrive, and we can do so gently and comfortably with oral surgery.
Summer is Perfect!
If you have a teen graduating high school and soon to start college, this summer is a great time to tackle this issue so they lose their wisdom teeth and avoid complications, and do so without missing school or falling behind in the fall! Our team will examine the smile with digital imaging technology, so we can peer into the jaw and assess the position of these teeth and then plan extraction to ensure we covid contact with blood vessels, nerve tissues, and sinus cavities.
The Extraction Process
When the time comes for the extraction, we will numb the area with a local anesthesia, and then we will recommend a form of sedation to help your teen enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, often with little to no memory of the process at all. Our team will then gently open the gums above the wisdom teeth so we can gently extract them with a pair of forceps. We then carefully suture the area closed. Our team will provide instructions for preventing complications and allowing the area to heal properly, and we will remove sutures in a follow-up visit. We also discuss prescriptions for medications to aid in the healing process and ensure your teen’s comfort.
If you have any questions about how we remove wisdom teeth with a tooth extraction, or if you want to see if this is necessary for your child before they start the next exciting stage of their life, then reach out to our team today!
